Even the smallest bit of exercise can make a big difference to balancing your emotions. Low-impact exercises like walking , yoga , leisurely cycling or even gentle stretching can help your body feel better, and your mind feel clearer and calmer.

Whatever exercise you take, the important thing is that you try to incorporate it into your daily routine. You could try going for a walk after breakfast, or doing some yoga in the evening.

Getting outside and spending time in nature can have a powerful effect on our emotions. Studies show that spending just 10 minutes a day in natural surroundings can reduce stress and improve feelings of happiness. Fresh air or a strong breeze! can act as a refresher for our brains, literally blowing unpleasant thoughts away and helping us feel present.

Pay attention to the sounds and smells around you, take deep breaths, and try to connect to your surroundings. Some people find it especially beneficial to spend time among trees. This not only allows leaders to manage their emotions, but also spreads their calm to those they lead. A calm leader is especially vital in a crisis. Cognitive research shows that disturbing emotional reactions hinder our ability to focus and make good decisions.

The key player here is the amygdala, circuitry in the emotional centers that constantly scan for threats in our environment. That shuts down the thinking brain for the time being and so disrupts our ability to think clearly, let alone manage our emotions.

And like the other EI competencies, we can strengthen this neural pathway. Leaders with strengths in emotional balance can handle stressful situations—like a budget cut or demanding client—with ease.

And managing our emotions in a healthy way creates better outcomes in our work and personal lives. To cultivate emotional balance, we need a solid foundation of emotional self-awareness.

We can boost this by tuning in to our emotions and practicing self-reflection, ideally on a daily basis. An accurate understanding of our strengths and weaknesses is essential to self-awareness.

Another way to help strengthen emotional balance: improve resilience. To practice this, notice your emotional triggers over the course of the day. Get into the habit of writing them down every evening. Over time, you'll start to catch your response to triggers as they happen.

Such mindful awareness of triggers makes it far easier to remain clear-headed in a difficult situation. A daily meditation habit can also help. Emotional balance won't make you a modern-day hero, but it might just help you be more effective as a leader. How do we maintain a healthy balance of positive and negative emotions? Research suggests that negative emotions have a stronger effect on how we feel overall than positive emotions. What we can do, however, is to carry out simple daily habits which help us to focus more on our positive emotions, encouraging them to stick a bit more.

This in turn will help to make us healthier and more successful, which will then lead to more positive emotions, and so on. In turn, how we think affects what we do. So, our behaviour is affected by our thoughts and emotions.

In addition, the way we behave, and the outcomes of our behaviour, affects how we think and feel. There is therefore an ongoing relationship between our thoughts, feelings and behaviour - see diagram below:.

So, we can help to take control of our emotions by changing the way we think. We can decide how we are going to respond when bad things happen to us.

And we can think positively about our lives to help encourage positive emotion. We can help push negative thoughts out of our mind, by doing something to try and take our mind off them for a while, like going for a walk or a swim or phoning a friend.

The physical exercise or contact with a friend can also give us a little boost of positive emotion which opens our minds to possible solutions to our problems. We can also argue with our negative thoughts by clearly examining the facts of the situation.
